Rescue Story
The conditions at Gimpo dog farm were dire. The owner of the farm had most likely been keeping dogs there, including dozens of popular small-breed dogs, in order to get compensation once the land was sold for real estate development. WEACT asked the owner to give up the dogs, who weren¡¯t even being provided with basic food and water, but they refused as they wanted to hold out for compensation. However, WEACT refused to give up and persisted in convincing the owner. We were ultimately able to rescue all the dogs from the farm, including Sugar.

Personality
Sugar is still uncomfortable with people touching him, perhaps because he was neglected for so long inside a cage. He gets startled if you touch him suddenly or if a hand comes at him from outside his range of sight. But Sugar¡¯s a quick and enthusiastic learner, so once he starts living with his family, we¡¯re sure that he¡¯ll learn how nice it is to be touched in no time. Sugar LOVES food, and the most anticipated time of day for him is meal time. He may seem a little snooty at times, but that¡¯s when his cute, affectionate side comes out!

With humans
Sugar enjoys spending time with people he¡¯s familiar with, but he needs a little more time to feel comfortable when it comes to strangers. If you understand this and wait for Sugar to open up, you¡¯ll be able to see just how adorably affectionate he can be! But even after he gets to know you, don¡¯t get too bold, because he¡¯s still nervous about humans touching him.

With dogs
Sugar doesn't like dogs, so he needs human supervision if he¡¯s spending time around other dogs.

With cats
Sugar has never met a cat before.

Energy Level
Sugar doesn¡¯t have high activity levels, but he needs to be walked a moderate amount to release energy and relieve stress. He also likes to go potty outdoors, so he¡¯ll need at least two short walks a day.

Shedding/Barking
Sugar sheds a lot. He doesn¡¯t bark at all.

Needs help with
Since Sugar¡¯s behavior varies a lot depending on who he¡¯s interacting with, you¡¯ll need to be patient and gradually help him build trust. Because he¡¯s not used to being touched, he¡¯ll need continued positive reinforcement training in order to get used to the warmth of people¡¯s hands. He¡¯ll also need socialization training to learn how to greet his canine friends, who he currently dislikes.

Health Specifics
Sugar¡¯s eyes produce a lot of tears, so you¡¯ll need to pay close attention to the volume of tears coming out and the state of the skin around his eyes.

Ideal family
Because Sugar dislikes other dogs, it would be best if he could go to a home where he¡¯ll be an only dog. And since being touched suddenly still startles him, a calm family with children over high school age would be more suitable than one with young children. Sugar is sure to open up if you give him enough time. Sugar¡¯s looking for a forever family to share his favorite time of day – dinner time – and the rest of his life!
