Rescue story
In the sweltering summer of 2021, WEACT headed to Gumi after receiving a report that a dozen or so dogs were trapped in a lighting store that had gone out of business. There, we were met with a terrible sight. The dogs had been left without any drinking water in temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) in a space without any kind of ventilation. The owner of the place was also raising 70 dogs at the foot of the mountains not far from there. It was so scorching hot here in #GumiDogHell that it was hard even for humans to stay standing. Berry was found there with her four puppies in a hole she had dug in the ground and a shade net that was sandwiched between two cages. We didn¡¯t even know Berry was there before she gave birth, as she¡¯d hidden herself away. But after giving birth, she poked her nose out from the tiny hiding spot that humans couldn¡¯t even fit into, as if she were asking for help.

Personality
Hello! I am Berry, your local detective!

Berry¡¯s curious about all sorts of smells, so she usually walks quite slowly to take in the world with her little nose. She may act cautious if she encounters strangers and unfamiliar objects or hears unexpected sounds, but she will sniff around carefully and explore the area to investigate! Another charming point about Berry is that she is very considerate of her canine friends. She greets them politely and sounds them out by sniffing them. It would be helpful for Berry to meet similar friends who can patiently wait for her to open up! Berry gets very scared when people approach her with something in their hands, such as a stick or a garbage bag. She also gets very uncomfortable when people stare at her. Berry may be unfamiliar with being touched around her belly, face, and paws. But when she realizes that the person won¡¯t harm her, she calmly goes about her own business. With lots of encouragement and love, our detective Berry will be ready to experience the most out of this world!

With humans
Berry tends to be wary of strangers, but because of her curiosity, she¡¯ll sneak up on and sniff people. The quickest way to become friends with her is to first ignore her and give treats to other dogs, then give her one when she feels more comfortable and approaches you.

With dogs
Berry approaches other dogs calmly and sniffs them in greeting. She's not the biggest fan of dogs who are too aggressive, but she¡¯s so good-natured that she can get along with any dog, simply ignoring them if she needs to. Berry will feel comfortable meeting friends who take their time to say hello.

With cats
Berry doesn¡¯t show much interest in cats.

Energy Level
Our curious Berry loves to observe the environment. She needs at least one walk per day so she can enjoy getting in lots of sniffs!

Shedding/Barking
Since Berry has a double coat, she will shed. She rarely barks!

Needs help with
Berry has 100% mastered going potty both indoors and outdoors! After receiving luxating patella surgery, she may prefer doing her business on soft surfaces. Placing the pee pads on non-slip mats will help Berry feel more comfortable. While Berry knows her name, she may not come when called. It would be super helpful to work on reliable recall. Berry doesn¡¯t like getting her nails trimmed so please create a positive association with this activity using lots of treats!

Health specifics
Berry is allergic to pork so please make sure that her meals and treats do not contain them. She had luxating patella surgery performed on her left hind leg so taking her on slow, gentle walks will keep her muscles strong.

Ideal family
Berry has a curious mind and loves to explore during walks, but she may get easily scared by sudden noises and movements. It would be ideal for her to join a household with dogs rather than children. Having dog siblings whom she can rely on and make new memories with will help her adjust to her new home quickly. We hope Berry can find a loving family who can patiently wait for her to sniff her heart out and open up. Berry is ready to meet a forever family who enjoys going on walks, watching the seasons change, and experiencing new things together!
