Rescue story
In the summer of 2023, WEACT headed to a breeding facility in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do upon receiving a report. Despite having official government approval, the scene was more distressing than anything we had witnessed before. It was filled with severe abuse, illicit euthanizations, unauthorized c-section procedures, and other unlawful practices. Dogs with ruptured eyes, injured limbs, and such severe emaciation that they were in a state of shock were discovered. These unfortunate dogs had endured continuous breeding within cramped cages, with their lives disregarded, devoid of any compassion. Drawing from the evidence gathered at the scene and the tips we had received, WEACT confirmed the harrowing act of using a box cutter to open a mother dog's belly to extract the puppies. We also uncovered a freezer containing over 100 dog carcasses wrapped in newspaper. When the freezer became too crowded, the dogs were illegally buried in the nearby mountains. Initially estimating around 800 dogs at the site, we were ultimately astounded to discover a staggering total of 1,426 dogs. Fortunately, the dedicated efforts of approximately 20 fellow organizations who swiftly offered their assistance, volunteers from across the country, various government agencies, and the cooperation of Gyeonggi-do provided invaluable support for the rescue mission. Together, we achieved an unprecedented miracle by saving all the abused dogs. WEACT brought home 32 dogs, including #weact_carat.

Personality
We've chosen to pave Carat's life with diamonds. Thanks to a generous donation from Seventeen's S.Coups, her name became Carat, which is the group's official fandom name. Carat is a smiling angel who loves both friends and people, though she tends to favor people a bit more. Her eyes are always on people, and she shows affection by staying close to them, wagging her tail non-stop. While Carat was initially fearful of baths, she bravely gave them a try and even allowed brushing, clipping, and trimming. Food is a surefire way to have a great time with Carat, as she absolutely loves it. However, Carat is sensitive to sound and may wake up and bark at small noises, and she can feel uneasy in unfamiliar spaces. These aspects can be improved with the presence of a trustworthy guardian and a comfortable, safe environment.

With humans
Carat loves people, so she doesn't mind being touched. She's comfortable with both familiar and unfamiliar people, but she prefers familiar ones and enjoys following them around as a hobby. While she's still learning active recall, she loves people and treats, so communicating through eye contact with Carat will be possible!

With dogs
Carat gets along well with friends of similar build, but she can express frustration in situations where she might collide with them. Carat may display restraint or growl to protect what she likes, so it¡¯s important to engage in training and be able to control her in such situations. Since Carat hasn't met many friends other than other Hwaseong rescues at The Home, she should be carefully observed when meeting new dogs.

With cats
Carat hasn't met or lived with cats before.

Energy level
Carat has significantly recovered through consistent treatment and necessary surgery, leading to increased activity levels. Because she enjoys being around people, once her leash training is complete, she¡¯ll benefit from daily walks. She occasionally chews on her fabric home and plays at The Home, indicating she may engage in activities to expend energy when her activity levels aren't met.

Shedding/Barking
Carat doesn¡¯t shed much and tends to bark along with her friends. She may also bark when food is being prepared or when she¡¯s hungry.

Needs help with
Given Carat's 30% success rate with potty pads, she will need potty training for indoor living. She tends to become protective of her favorite things, sometimes getting upset when there's competition for toys or treats. It¡¯s important to teach her manners and focus. Currently, she struggles with walking straight and easily gets distracted, so she needs time to adjust to the leash.

Health specifics
At the time of rescue, Carat had a skin abscess on her left cheek, necessitating surgery and the extraction of three teeth. She also underwent surgery for patellar luxation and is currently undergoing rehabilitation exercises. Regular exercises involving standing and stretching her hind legs are necessary, along with consistent management. Short, frequent walks would be beneficial. Carat has brown patches on her skin, and her overall skin condition is poor, so she is being treated with chlorhexidine. Additionally, she has a significant amount of pus in her uterus, which requires management.

Ideal family
At the time of her rescue, Carat seemed listless, with unfocused eyes. However, at The Home, she courageously endured multiple treatments and gained enough energy to approach familiar people first. Now, her gaze is consistently fixed on people. If Carat finds a forever family, she'll be a dedicated member. Her calm acceptance of baths, brushing, and clipping reflects her trust in human touch. A family capable of providing a serene and secure environment would be the perfect fit for Carat. While she can thrive without another dog, having a companion whose temperament matches hers would be beneficial.
